Social media has profoundly transformed the way we navigate our lives. While apps like Instagram and TikTok have become familiar to us, society as a whole remains relatively new to this technological landscape. In recent years, discussions have emerged about how people should responsibly engage with these platforms.
As Christians, it is essential that we turn to the Bible for guidance whenever we face challenges. While social media did not exist when the Bible was written, there are verses that can offer insights into how we should interact on these platforms while upholding our Christian values.
Dealing with Envy
Apps like Instagram and Snapchat have become primary sources for observing the daily activities of friends, family, and even celebrities. While these platforms can be entertaining, unchecked usage can lead to harmful consequences.
Envy, a topic discussed extensively in the Bible, is known to breed destruction. Proverbs provides clear insights into this:
-
Proverbs 14:30 – “A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.”
-
Proverbs 27:4 – “Anger is cruel and fury overwhelming, but who can stand before jealousy?”
It is easy to scroll through these apps, see someone doing something impressive or looking attractive, and become envious. But we must remember that social media often presents an idealised version of reality. When jealousy arises, we should question its root and recall that we have a loving heavenly Father who sent His Son to secure our eternal salvation.
The Apostle Paul’s words in Philippians 4 remind us of this:
“I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
Paul’s example teaches us to remain content and rely on Christ’s strength, even in hardship.
Being the Light on Social Media
Another crucial aspect of social media use is how we choose to engage — whether sharing photos, sending messages, or commenting on posts. These actions should reflect our identity in Christ.
Jesus’ words in Matthew 5:14-16 encourage us:
“You are the light of the world… let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
We should aim to let His light shine through our online presence — by encouraging others, offering kind words, and spreading positivity. Ephesians 4:29 reinforces this:
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs.”
Even small acts of kindness online can influence others deeply and help create a more uplifting space.
Harnessing the Influence of Our Words
Social media gives us countless opportunities to speak — whether in group chats, comments, or direct messages. But with this freedom comes responsibility.
James 3:8-10 warns:
“With [the tongue] we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God… these things ought not to be so.”
Before posting, we should pause to ask:
-
Does this reflect Christ’s love?
-
Will it build others up rather than tear them down?
Even though the digital world can feel detached from reality, our words online impact real people with real emotions. As followers of Christ, we represent Him — our tone, actions, and content should reflect kindness, grace, and truth.
While social media is a space for connection and expression, we are called to navigate it with a Christ-like mindset, leaning on the Holy Spirit to guide our words and actions.
